Financial modeling jobs involve the creation of a virtual model, which allows management in a company or charity to assess the potential impact of certain business choices. Financial modeling is a relatively recent development, and new books are being produced on it every year. It remains somewhat controversial, but is gradually gaining a wider acceptance. Of course, anything which is dealing with projected reality can only ever be an inexact science, as it is impossible to accurately predict what will happen in the real world when a theoretical plan is implemented.

Nevertheless, it is possible to gain insight into the potential consequences of given actions by using such projections. Financial modeling can help to uncover potential pitfalls which may not have been considered before the modeling took place, and it can also highlight opportunities which would otherwise have been overlooked. The models basically use simple questioning to try to determine the potential outcome of different actions in the same situation. These outcomes can then be compared to determine the most likely best course of action.

Financial modeling is very much a procedure of the modern electronic age, and it is invariably carried out using computer software. What is most surprising is that in the majority of cases no dedicated software is used, despite such software being readily available. Usually, a simple office spreadsheet is used. This does at least have the merit of making the final results of the model accessible to more employees, as there are bound to be people at all levels of the organization who are comfortable with spreadsheet software.

To work in financial modeling, you will need to have some kind of background within the financial services industry. Usually, but not always, you will be chosen from within the organization itself, because an understanding of internal procedures is very helpful. Someone with previous experience of financial modeling in another organization can still be a considerable asset, especially if they have been working on similar projects. They can be teamed up with someone who has worked within the internal system of the present organization to produce an effective combination.

There is no actual requirement for a college degree to work in financial modeling jobs, but as a practical consideration it is pretty much essential. A college education is expected for entrants into accounting and financial planning, and it is from these backgrounds that financial modelers will be chosen. Gaining formal qualifications in accountancy or financial planning will be your obvious first step if you are planning to move into this career. These degrees can be obtained through home study courses delivered over the Internet, giving you the opportunity to keep your present position while you study. Once you are qualified and have some experience, you can begin applying for financial modeling jobs.
